The Bristol boy's basketball team finished the 1983-84 season with a 12-12 record. After a very slow start the team won 7 of its last 8 games before losing to Woodridge in the District by the score of 65-51. Included in the late season victories were upsets over Lordstown, Mathews, and the upset over 2nd seeded McDonald (52-51) to claim its first ever sectional championship and a trip to Canton. The team showed steady improvement over the course of the season and put it all together during the final month of the season.
The team was led in scoring by Shawn Green (18.3 ppg) and Dave Hendrickson (18.0). Hendrickson led the team in rebounds with 10 per game while Green averaged 9 rebounds per game. Ed List was the team's point guard who did an outstanding job of handling the ball and directing the team's offense. Ed led the team with over 100 assists. Ken Weeks and Kyle Larson played key roles both on offense and with their aggressive defensive play. Ralph Klouda was the key substitute for the team, coming off the bench and playing different positions and helping the team greatly.
Beating Lordstown was the turning point of the season as they were the first real good team that we beat during the year. After also beating Mathews one week later, the team gained much confidence going into tournament action. Six of the team's 12 victories were achieved in the 4th quarter after starting the quarter behind. The team showed much character in all games and realized that the team concepts was the way to success. The sectional championship and fine finish to the season brought much respect to the team and our school. It was a year in basketball to be remembered by many for many years to come.
